We probably all know which preparations work best for headaches, stomach pain, constipation or fever. When it comes to hemorrhoid therapy, we are not interested in the subject until the problem affects us personally. It is not surprising, after all, hemorrhoids are almost never talked about and honestly... few people admit to having any unpleasantness in this area - hemorrhoidal disease is (after all) a very troublesome condition. Although every second person after the age of 30 struggles with it, it is still a taboo subject.

It is worth being aware that hemorrhoids (i.e. hemorrhoids) are a common problem that affects a large part of society, which is why it is so important to be able to talk about them. A sedentary and inactive lifestyle, a poor diet (causing frequent constipation), age, pregnancy, childbirth, obesity, overload related to effort, or mechanical injuries - these are the most common causes of hemorrhoids. So what can we do when we hear the diagnosis?
What works in the treatment of hemorrhoids?
The most common methods of treatment include: local treatment (gels, ointments, suppositories), invasive (depending on the stage of the disease) and the use of preparations in tablets - most often based on diosmin and hesperidin. What are the substances mentioned? Do they have scientifically proven effects?
Diosmin is a glycoside from the flavonoid group occurring in nature, which can be isolated from various plants or obtained from the flavonoid hesperidin. This substance was first isolated in 1925 from the leaves of the tuberous figwort. In 1969, it was first used in medicine [1] . Diosmin, as one of the flavonoids, has multidirectional biological effects, including hypoglycemic, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. Indications for the use of diosmin include varicose veins of the lower limbs (caused by chronic venous insufficiency) and hemorrhoids [2] .
Many studies have been conducted that have confirmed the effectiveness of diosmin in the treatment of hemorrhoids. In one of them, Dr. Abdul-Wahed Meshikhes examined 105 patients with hemorrhoidal disease. The patients were given a drug based on diosmin for 4 weeks. The treatment included 23 patients with first-degree hemorrhoids, 73 with second-degree hemorrhoids and 9 patients with third-degree hemorrhoids. After the treatment, the patients noted significant improvement. Statistically, itching, pain and bleeding subsided, as well as an improvement in the proctological condition [3] . In another study, scientists examined the effect of diosmin administration in acute hemorrhoidal conditions. The trial was conducted on 90 patients, of which the first group (49 people) received diosmin, while the second group received placebo (41 patients). After 7 days of therapy, a significant reduction in symptoms was observed: swelling, pain and bleeding in the group receiving diosmin, compared to the group receiving placebo [4] . As confirmed by scientific reports, diosmin is an effective and safe substance, and importantly - due to its beneficial effect on the elasticity of vessels - it can be used with very good results in hemorrhoidal disease!
As for hesperidin (an equally popular and effective substance from the flavonoid group), it is most often found in lemons, oranges, grapefruits, limes and tangerines, or more specifically in the pulp and peels of the aforementioned fruits. Hesperidin has numerous properties, including sealing and making the walls of blood vessels more elastic. It is also a strong antioxidant (eliminates harmful free radicals).
In the treatment of hemorrhoids, a combination of hesperidin with the above-mentioned diosmin brings very good results. Numerous studies show that these substances have a protective effect on the walls of blood vessels. In turn, scientists T. Jean and MC Bodinier proved that diosmin in combination with hesperidin inhibits the synthesis of inflammation mediators (arachidonic acid) and the release of free radicals [5] .
Preparations based on diosmin and hesperidin are popular on the market due to their effectiveness and positive effect in the symptomatic treatment of hemorrhoids. Therefore, when the problem of hemorrhoids affects you or your loved ones, it is worth reaching for proven and tested agents.
