Do we have any morning coffee fans here? Black, with milk, or maybe... with butter? Yes, you don't have to rub your computer screen in surprise! Butter coffee exists and even has its own name - bulletproof coffee.

Although some treat bulletproof coffee as a novelty, you should know that in many cultures, coffee and tea with butter have enjoyed considerable recognition for generations (including the Himalayan Sherpas, the Ethiopian Gurage). The creator of the famous bulletproof coffee is considered to be Dave Asprey, an American blogger who, during his trip to Tibet, became fascinated by the local custom of adding yak butter to tea. Asprey slightly modified the recipe and swapped the tea for coffee, and the yak butter for cow's milk butter with the addition of MCT oil. Asprey himself, who is a supporter of a low-carb diet, puts bulletproof coffee as an alternative to carbohydrate breakfasts, which supports both weight loss, concentration, and brain function!

So if you don't like eating first thing in the morning, bulletproof coffee might be a great solution for you! It's not a full-fledged breakfast, but it gives you a sense of satiety and energy for a longer period of time. If you're on a diet (including a ketogenic diet) and want to lose a few extra pounds, it's also worth considering consuming this blend!

How to make bulletproof coffee?

Basically, you need 3 ingredients: 100% Arabica coffee (freshly ground), butter (preferably from fresh grass-fed cows), and MCT oil (e.g. coconut oil). Blend everything together for about 20-30 seconds and… enjoy a new, exciting flavor!

Benefits of Drinking Bulletproof Coffee

The internet is full of stories from people who confirm that bulletproof coffee adds energy, increases concentration, and also helps with weight loss. If you are looking for scientific evidence, it is worth focusing on the ingredients themselves!

  • Coffee is full of health-promoting antioxidants. It helps burn fat, improves blood circulation, adds energy and reduces the risk of some diseases (including Parkinson's disease, diabetes, and some cancers [1] ).
  • Grass-fed butter contains more powerful antioxidants (including beta-carotene) and omega-3 fatty acids than regular butter, and it also has more vitamins A, D, and E [2] .
  • Coconut oil is full of medium-chain saturated fatty acids (MCTs), which are not stored as fat tissue. It is also one of the sources of lauric acid, which is responsible for fighting bacteria, viruses and fungi. Studies have shown that MCT oil helps with weight loss and improves cholesterol levels [3] .

Disadvantages of Drinking Bulletproof Coffee

While it is clear that all the ingredients used in bulletproof coffee provide a range of health benefits, no study has yet been conducted to fully confirm the benefits of combining these products. Drinking bulletproof coffee every day can give you the false impression that you are introducing a healthy habit into your diet – no matter how you look at it, it is meant to replace a full meal. Another problem is the high content of saturated fats. When consumed in excess, they can be harmful. The last thing to consider is the potential for raising cholesterol levels (due to the butter content), so some people should simply avoid bulletproof coffee.
