Black Friday – how did it start?

Black Friday was born in the United States and eventually made its way to Europe. It is celebrated every year on Friday. Its history begins in the second half of the 19th century. Thanksgiving falls on the last Thursday of November. On this day, Americans meet for a gala dinner with family and loved ones to give thanks for the good things that happened to them throughout the year. In the USA, this day is a day off from work. The name Black Friday was supposedly first used in the 1960s, when the streets and shops in Philadelphia were so crowded due to sales that it required police intervention. Another theory says that the roots of this day should be sought in the situation on the gold market in 1869 - at that time the market price of this commodity reached a record high as a result of speculation. The US government intervened, which caused a sharp drop in the value of gold.

Black Friday in Poland

In Poland, Black Friday is organized on the same day as in the United States, but only for a few years. Each year, the scale of Black Friday grows, and more popular stores join the event - attractive sales are available both online and in brick-and-mortar stores. In order for customers to take advantage of high discounts, stores are open longer that day. In Poland, promotions have a different character than abroad - often noteworthy discounts are available throughout the week of Black Friday or from Friday to Monday, which is called Cyber Monday.

Promotions are not as attractive on the Vistula as overseas, but Poles are happy to take advantage of them. On Black Friday, shopping malls organize special events such as concerts by celebrities and extend their opening hours, preparing so-called shopping nights with further discounts and promotions. This is to attract even more people to visit them. This year, however, Black Friday will be special - due to the epidemic restrictions, many stores in shopping malls (including clothing, footwear, sports and perfumeries) will not be open on November 27 - they will not open until Saturday, although many of them can still offer various promotions. Fortunately, online stores remain available to Poles.

Where exactly did the name "Black Friday" come from? There is no clear answer to this question. There are three equally likely stories of how the name came to be.

The first concerns street traffic, and specifically the gigantic traffic jams that formed around shops that day.

According to another theory, the name Black Friday was first used by the media in 1981. It was meant to be a positive term, indicating the exceptional profits that retailers made on that day.

The third has nothing to do with shopping. Some people believe that the term Black Friday comes from the large wave of layoffs among employees on that day.
