Kudzu - also known as Pueraria lobata or kudzu root - is a medicinal plant that has been used in traditional Chinese and Japanese medicine for centuries. In recent years, it has gained popularity in the West as a natural supplement that supports weight loss. Can kudzu root actually help with weight loss? How to use it to enjoy faster and safe weight loss and lower body fat? We will answer these questions in today's post.
What is kudzu?
Kudzu is a climbing plant native to Southeast Asia, although it also grows naturally in Japan and Oceania. It is known for its rapid growth - rhizomes can reach lengths of up to 30 meters, which has made it an invasive species in some regions of the world. In Eastern Europe, South Africa and North America, kudzu has the status of an exceptionally persistent weed. In turn, in places where it grows naturally, it is commonly used in traditional medicine, as well as in cooking. However, there is one specific part of this plant that scientists pay special attention to. We are talking about the kudzu root, which is used in phytotherapy and the prevention of many different diseases.
Kudzu root contains many bioactive ingredients, including isoflavones such as daidzein, genistein, and puerarin. They have been studied for many years for their potential health benefits, including antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Daidzein and genistein, which belong to the group of phytoestrogens, have antioxidant properties and potential benefits in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases. In turn, puerarin, another important active ingredient of kudzu root, has been studied in the context of its effect on metabolism and support for the work of the heart and its muscles. The properties of kudzu and its root mean that more and more people - both young and old - decide to include it in their daily supplementation. At the very beginning of the entry, however, we mentioned that kudzu root extract can be used as a support for weight loss. To what extent is this true and to what extent is it a placebo? As studies show, kudzu root supplementation can actually have an impact on accelerating the weight loss process.
Kudzu Root for Weight Loss - Does It Work?
There are two scientific studies - at least as of the date of this post - that confirm the beneficial effects of kudzu root on weight loss. One of them was conducted on a group of obese Japanese people and showed that regular consumption of food containing kudzu root extract for 12 weeks led to a lower BMI and a reduction in the area of visceral fat, without affecting subcutaneous fat tissue. Interestingly, the effect of reducing visceral fat was independent of the participants' gender. This indicates a specific effect of kudzu root extract on visceral fat, which is considered particularly harmful in the context of metabolic and cardiovascular diseases. Another study, on the other hand, was conducted on mice with obesity, which was induced by the implementation of a high-fat diet. In order to test the effectiveness of kudzu root supplementation on weight loss, the rodents were given a low-calorie diet with the addition of kudzu root extract. After a few weeks, it was found that the supplementation significantly reduced body weight and white adipose tissue mass, and also reduced fatty liver in mice. These results are especially important for people struggling with excess weight. Fatty liver is an inevitable result of extra pounds and can lead to serious health complications.
These studies shed new light on the potential impact of kudzu root on weight loss. They allow us to draw conclusions about the participation of kudzu root extract in the process of inhibiting lipogenesis in the liver and stimulating lipolysis in white adipose tissue. However, it must be remembered that a few studies do not provide a basis for considering kudzu root as a reliable remedy for overweight - so you should not expect magical, instant effects. Does this mean that supplementing kudzu root extract makes no sense? Absolutely not. This plant also has many other health properties, which we mentioned earlier. It is therefore worth reaching for kudzu root not only for weight loss, but also to support proper heart function - an aspect of health that is very important for physically active people.

Kudzu Root - Where to Buy and How to Supplement It?
Due to the fact that kudzu root is becoming increasingly popular in Europe, its availability is growing year by year. It can be found in many health food stores, pharmacies and online stores with natural dietary supplements. When buying kudzu root, it is worth paying attention to the manufacturer's reputation and the composition of the product. It is important that it contains as much kudzu extract and the root of this plant as possible. This supplement is available in various forms, including capsules and liquid extract. In stores and pharmacies, you can also find kudzu and its cut root, which can be poured with hot water. This creates an aromatic infusion with a tart, slightly sweet taste, perfect for a meal.
It is worth remembering, however, that supplementation of kudzu root for weight loss requires consultation with a doctor or pharmacist. Studies show that its extract cannot be combined with individual substances - e.g. anticoagulant or antidiabetic drugs. Taking supplements with kudzu root during pharmacotherapy may weaken its effects or cause side effects. If the doctor or pharmacist does not notice any contraindications, the preparation should be used according to the specialist's recommendations or the instructions included in the package. It is also important to remember that supplements should not replace a varied diet and a healthy lifestyle, and their use should be part of a balanced approach to health and weight loss. Kudzu root supplementation will not bring results if it is accompanied by a high-fat diet and little physical activity.
